Freeview viewers may need to retune their TV or set-top box when the broadcast frequencies change in the Wellington region on Tuesday 19 June. The changes only affect Freeview terrestrial viewers who receive signals from the Kaukau, Fitzherbert, Baxters Knob and Haywards transmitters. They will not affect Sky subscribers, analogue TV viewers or Freeview satellite TV viewers. The Ministry of Economic Development's Radio Spectrum Policy and Planning Manager Len Starling said: 'Affected viewers will see a message pop up on their TV screens this week, prompting them to retune when the frequencies change. Retuning can be done simply using the remote control.' 'Those who watch Freeview TV and share an aerial with others, such as in an apartment building or retirement village, should contact their property manager for advice on whether their installation requires any modification.' Managers of apartments, hotels or motels are advised to talk to an installer prior to the frequencies being changed to see if any technical adjustments are needed. The channel frequencies are changing to ensure that New Zealand's radio spectrum is freed up for other uses and emerging technologies. HOW TO RETUNE 1. Switch on your Freeview TV or set-top box and press 'menu' on the remote control. Select the 'setup' or 'installation' option. 2. Select 'full retuning', 'digital auto tuning' or similar (some equipment may require you to select 'first time installation', 'factory reset' or 'default settings'). 3. Your existing frequencies will be deleted and automatically replaced. This may take a few minutes and your equipment may shut down and restart. 4. Check that you can receive all of your normal Freeview channels.Helpful advice on retuning is also available on the Ministry website, www.retune.co.nz. Alternatively, people can call the Radio Spectrum Management free helpline on 0508 336 633 if they have any problems retuning their TV or set-top box.

DishTV T1050PVR loses video
This has been discussed before under this thread (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=93530&page_no=1#553367), but my PVR is still not working properly. It seems I just had a temporary fix. Ever since I received the DishTV update over the air in November 2011, I have had a problem where (most days) I switch on the PVR and there is no video. The only way to fix it is to hold down the power button on the front of the PVR to do a reboot. The PVR is then fixed until the next day. Does anyone else have this issue and know of a fix? I'm still communicating with DishTV support but I think they are running out of things for me to try now. Each time I try something, I have to wait until the next day to see if it has worked.

Dish TV S7010PVR PROBLEMS
Hello Guys and Gals. Bit of a problem with my new box for Sat TV. I have previously dumped Sky and invested in a sat box - Dish TV S7010 PVR. The connection of the box to the TV seems good, I get all the menus etc. Dandy. The channels seem to be pre-set i.e. TV1 TV2 etc. But I am not receiving a sausage picture wise. Now forgive my ignorance, but if I was receiving Sky I should be able to receive Freeview through the box? Perhaps not, as the decoder frequently reminds me. When flicking through the menus, SET UP INSTALLATION TRANSPONDER MANAGER, the frequencies all seem to be there and I seem to have a signal but on and off with the quality, more off than on I should say. Have auto scanned and came up completely empty, other than the dish itself, which I know nothing about, apart from the fact that the signal bounces off the dish onto a gadget and gets sent into the TV. Haven't got the Sky box anymore, so I cannot plug it back in and check, but I'm pretty sure the connection to the dish is OK. The sky box was just the basic, nothing fancy. I'm not an Satellite wizard, but didn't think you had to be. Apparently not. There's me thinking it would be so easy. One conciliation, the USB Media player works a treat. It's a good box if only I could get it to work. I won't break the hammer out just yet. Any help or suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you. Kind regards. Grim.

Transonic UHF Decoder - TC2884STB - LOCKUP!
Device is locked on Channel50, Radio NZ's National Radio. However, there is no audio, and nothing sent to screen. Can't find a reset button. Have tried totally disconnecting power - no change. I reckon this situation occured after I switched to standby overnight whilst tuned to Radio NZ. It could be a software bug. Another Warehouse swapout?

SkyHD and RF Modulator
Cross Posting from Sky forum. Hi I am using and RF Modulator (set to Channel 38) with SkyHD to send the sky signal to my televisions via coax cable. Not sure if it is a coincidence but since the Freeview frequency changes it is no longer working. Is this just coincidence or could the change have affected this? Cheers Richard

Sky and other A/V in a school
Hi, help please... I work at a school as the ICT and A.V coordinator. We would like to get sky tv into 13 classrooms for the Olympic games, we will only be getting one decoder. We have several makes and models of Data projectors in the classes which will be used to display, not the best I know but its what we have. The Projects have VGA input as the only wired input, and we have powered speakers wired to composite plugs in the wall next to the VGA plug. They are RGB/Yr over VGA compatible I do not have the budget to run any more cables. Maximum budget perhaps $3000 9 of the classes have coax cables going back to a central head with which goes through the amps, duplexes and splitters up to the dish, and UHF terrestrial on the roof My question(s) If i get a RF modulator and plug in the sky decoder to it Then purchase 9 terrestrial set top boxes, will it pick up the analog signal from the modulator? or do they only pick up digital channels? any suggestions for how to get audio and video to the other 4 classes that only have cat6 network cabling running to them? (all 13 classes have cat6 networks)

Recommended Satellite PVRs?
Hi everyone, I just moved house in Christchurch into a new place that happens to be *just* outside of line of sight for terrestrial UHF freeview. Gutted. So much for the money invested in my Tivo. Can anyone recommend a very good Satellite PVR or two? With a similar level of user friendly interface to a TiVo. A protected kids mode (similar to TiVo) that restricts kids to specified program levels (G, PG etc) unless they have a pin code would be great. Ability to remotely book recording requests would be great too. Thank you!

PS3 PlayTV Stutter/Pixelating
Ok, so previous discussions on PS3 PlayTV stuttering have suggested various solutions but as far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on what fixes this problem.I have the early PS3 with 80GB drive. PlayTV would stutter and became worse as time went on. I did a full format (the long version) and things improved, but didn't go away completely.I researched other users and found that some people have a Western Digital 320GB drive and have no problems. So I bought the WD3200BEVT drive and initially thought I'd solved the issue. Even playing a game while PlayTV recorded seemed ok. However within 3 weeks it has started stuttering worse than my original drive. For instance, I watch a recording (which has no stutter) while recording another channel and it starts to stutter every 10-15 secs repeatedly. It settles if I stop the playback and restart, but then it starts doing it again shortly after. Obviously the hard drive heads are busy recording data to one part of the drive while reading data from another location. Presumably over time the drive gets scrambled and the heads start to fly backwards and forwards as fast as they can. So is the answer to get a data transfer rate that can cope? What experience do other users have?

tvnz7 becomes tv1 plus 1
http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv/6857009/TVNZ7-scrapped-in-favour-of-repeats-channel?comment_msg=posted#post_comment "TV One has been selected as the time-shifted channel to maximise exposure for the great local content, news and current affairs that it features." my personal view is tvnz should be pushing for what they sell to sky to be on freeview, a heartland channel would of been far better than a time shift repeat of tv 1, i really cannot think of the last time i watched tv1.

Samsung TV records Freeview, but misses end.
Having bought a new Samsung TV (40" D6600 model), I was pleased to see that it is capable of recording to a HDD connected to one of the USB ports. And, it works well EXCEPT.... that many of the programmes I set to to record a cut off a minute or two early. Very frustrating indeed. I tried setting up recordings manually, with a few extra minutes added to the end time, and this works, but you can't set up recording to regularly record every week this way. Just one off recordings. Hardly satisfactory if you want to see the same show every week. Recordings set via the Freeview EPG can be set to record a whole series - but these recordings often stop prematurely. There is no option to add a few extra minutes. I even tried setting the clock a few minutes slow, but no, that didn't work either. So, why is it that when you set up a programme to record from the Freeview EPG, it doesn't quite get the whole programme every time? The actual recording time varies from show to show. Does Freeview send a "stop recording" signal, which isn't in sync with the actual programme? Or maybe Samsung's recording options are too limited, as you can't manually set recordings to happen manually every week, and there is no "add 5 mins" type control to ensure recording finish after the programmes end. So, either Samsung, or Freeview are making an otherwise good feature - useless!

Kapiti Coast - Poor freeview signal options.
So I contacted Clearvision and got an installer to come out to put the aerial i bought up on my roof. He's just left and told me me that my aerial is fine but the signal isnt good enough here (I am in Raumati) and charged me $125 for the call out :( Seemed a nice guy etc but obviously bummed ive just paid $125 for nothing. The receipt basically says "Signal test with ts 43, signal extremely low, -3 on first band -2 on second and 3 band not registering". Do I have any alternatives that arent gonna cost me much more to investigate? or is that low signal just game over for getting freeview? Have 2 freeview capable TVs in the house - one now has sky and the other is being used as a PC monitor in the meantime :(

Complete Freeview noob
Argh - got all this typed up and lost it. Second time lucky! I have MySky in the living room, with an RF cable running to a second TV in the bedroom. My daughter has a TV in her room, connected to a cheap indoor aerial that gets very poor reception. With all the digital switch-over talk, I'm thinking of getting Freeview for my daughter's room. There is an old aerial on the roof at the back of the house that I've never used. I read somewhere that if I can get Prime on that aerial then it's probably OK for Freeview, so I'm going to test that next week. Let's say I can get Prime. In theory, all I need is a set top box, right? Are they easy enough to set up myself, or will I need a qualified installer? Will the quality of signal I get now (e.g. if it's like watching Prime through a snow storm) have any bearing on the quality I can expect from Freeview? I'm not looking at a box that can record, but are there any particular features or spec.s I should look out for? Are there brands to get, or to avoid? If I can't get Prime now, I'm going to need a new aerial. Are those little indoor UHF ones any good or will it need to be outside, on the roof? Does it need to be pointed in a particular direction? Where are the transmitters in Wellington? I'm in Lower Hutt, up on the Western Hills. A Line drawn straight down the hill from my place would cut through Pal n'Save. I saw a Freeview map a couple of months ago and most of the hillside where I live was green ("very likely") with the odd purple ("uncertain") spot here and there. And any other info a novice like me might need would be greatly appreciated…

Freeview retune question
A friend has said that he 'percieves' a slight change in the colour of 'some programs' after the retune here in Wellington on June 19th. He is elderly, and we all know that something new is always different to what we used to have , but could the retune actually cause a noticible colour or hue change ? R.

Optus D1, Optus D2 - same dish - two tellys....polarity problems.
Hi Not strictly freeview, but related to DVB-S. Trying to diagnose, fix a problem for my Mother in law. She has an 80cm dish on her house with a special Dual LNB rig that takes a feed from Optus D1 for Freeview channels and Optus D2 for the foreign content channels. Specifically she wants the ERT Greek channel. I mention this one specifically as I think it's Horizontal polarity (where as freeview is vertical - reverse these if needed, the point is ERT is different polarity to freeview). Now she has a telly in the lounge with a STB that receives both satellites no problems. She has a 2nd telly in the bedroom with it's own STB, and I understand there's a box (possibly a diseqc switch) that was supposed to allow both satellites in the bedroom. The problem is all she receives in the bedroom is the ERT, a freeview channel shows a blank screen. I'm about ready to give up on using satellite for freeview and get her to buy a Freeview Capable TV (get an aerial installed etc) and reduce the lounge STB to ONLY the optus D2 feed. Couple of questions: Should the original setup be working? There may be two cables coming from the dish to the house. What could possibly be wrong? If the lounge was using UHF for Freeview and STB for ERT, would the bedroom now magically get freeview and ERT (by the fact that it is the sole device now setting the polarity? Essentially it would be the reverse of what is happening now)

My freeview HD, not HD!?
Like all good digital citizens, we had a new UHF areal installed last year and recently bought a new Panasonic 42" LCD TV. However, although not unwatchable, the Freeview HD progammes are not the crisp clean HD we were expecting. It's hard to explain for a non-tech like me, but text appears jaggy around the edges, graphics are ghosty and people are blotchy. I've downloaded some HD trailers off Youtube and they look perfect so I can only think it's the signal. The guy who installed the UHF aerial at the end of last year suggested I check the signal quality - and it's strong at 8-10. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions/angles I should try?

New channels detected (CHCH)
Just flicking through channels on the TiVO this morning and I found 3 new ones from 353-355 - two of them seem to be the Chinese channel "33" ( I remember receiving that in the early days of Freeview) and 355 was another instance of TV One +1...is this just some sort of engineering test or something or is it related to the new religious channel that supposed to start soon?
